While talking about homelessness and kindness with a teacher at her elementary school, then-fourth-grader Audrey commented that "we have so much and they have so little. What can we do?" After discussion with her teacher about items most needed by the unsheltered homeless here in our very own city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Audrey went home and immediately started working on a flyer for her first collection drive. After a few weeks, she had collected hundreds of socks and personal care items for those experiencing homelessness. Through that drive, and after learning that socks are the number one item requested by homeless shelters, Socks With A Mission was Born!
Through her teacher, Audrey was also able to personally meet a homeless neighbor in Pittsburgh, which solidified her interest in growing a charity organization to collect and distribute socks to the those experiencing homelessness. Since then, Socks With A Mission has established relationships with numerous shelters and homeless service providers throughout the city of Pittsburgh and nearby communities. It has also recently started a Certificate Program, whereby other students can hold their own sock drives in their organizations and neighborhoods.
In 2021 alone, Socks With A Mission has distributed nearly 19,000 pair of socks in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, including Erie, PA, Wheeling, WV, and Youngstown, OH, to various organizations assisting those in need.
